Volume 6 appeared on 18 July 2011 and is built around two themed symposia.

Conditions of a moral society

The papers come from an international conference held in Oslo from 27 to 29 August 2009 to mark 250 years since The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Three Oslo research centres hosted and funded it. Guest editors were Christel Fricke, Raino Malnes, Kalle Moene and Ragnvald Kalleberg.

The papers cover:
– psychology and moral normativity (Maria Alejandra Carrasco)
– moral progress (Carola von Villiez)
– the rules of justice and self-deceit (Christel Fricke and Samuel Fleischacker)
– propriety, persuasion and political theory (Duncan Kelly)
– social distance (Lisa Hill) and recognition (John O’Neill)
– reciprocity in Seneca and Smith, and the prisoners’ dilemma (Jon Elster)
– the moral sentiments of the Wealth of Nations (Vivienne Brown and Karl Ove Moene)

The Shaftesbury problem

Douglas Den Uyl’s article and commentary on Shaftesbury’s influence draw responses from James Otteson and Ryan Hanley.

The fate of Anglo-American capitalism

Guest editor Sandra Peart introduces this second symposium, which asks what Smith’s teaching on institutions and money means for modern economic crises. One paper by Hugh Rockoff looks at the credit crisis of 1772.
