Calls for papers
Smith and Rousseau, Glasgow, July 2015
The International Adam Smith Society and the Rousseau Association planned a joint meeting at the University of Glasgow from 20 to 22 July 2015. The theme was the shared concerns of two Enlightenment figures, with welcome topics including pity, sympathy, commerce, freedom, nature and science. Organisers particularly wanted papers that dealt with both thinkers. Expressions of interest were due on 1 January 2015.
Scotland, Europe and Empire, Paris, July 2013
The Eighteenth-Century Scottish Studies Society held its 26th annual conference jointly with the International Adam Smith Society at the Sorbonne from 3 to 6 July 2013, its first European meeting in six years. The theme was eighteenth-century empire: Scotland’s role in the British Empire and others, how Scots dealt with Europeans abroad, how empire was theorised in political economy and how it appeared in fiction, travel writing and philosophy. Plenary lectures were announced by Emma Rothschild, Amartya Sen and Michel Biziou, and proposals were due by December 2012.
The fate of Anglo-American capitalism
The Review also planned a symposium asking whether the robust capitalism favoured in Smith’s work has reached its limits, looking at current events through his teaching on institutions and money.
